Thoroughbred Transition Project

The Thoroughbred Transition Project (TPP) is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in July of 2025, led by Natalie Wales and based in The Plains, Virginia. Our mission is to provide individualized care and retraining for retired racehorses, including both flat and steeplechase competitors. Instead of forcing these recycled racehorses into predetermined roles, we listen to each horse's needs and guide them toward the career and home where they will be happiest and best suited. Drawing on decades of expertise, we ensure that every retired racehorse finds a safe, loving future beyond the track.

"A Thoroughbred is a horseman's horse. They can be reactive and sensitive. They require consistency and patience. They will make you painfully aware of your shortcomings. A Thoroughbred will also make you realize your strengths. When properly prepared, they will outrun and out-try all the competition. They will give you every ounce of their big hearts. So, if your horse is spooky, skinny, flighty or crazy, it's not because your horse is Thoroughbred. It is simply your Thoroughbred calling upon you to become the horseman he needs

    you to be."   -- Unknown

The natural impulses of every thoroughbred include his sense of honor; his love of fair play and courage; his dislike of pretense and of cheapness.  -- Emily Post

"A good Thoroughbred is like a four-wheel drive Ferrari. If you are good enough to manage the gears, it's the ride of your life," -- Uknown
